August 15, 2020. Today was supposed to be my wedding day.
Instead of wearing a white dress in a church and pledging to marry the man I love, I’m wearing a bikini on a beach and holding hands with my husband of four months. Now there’s a plot twist!
My husband and I got married on April 5, 2020 in a live-stream wedding with only ten people in attendance. It looked nothing like a normal wedding. No fanfare and frippery, no gowns and glamour… Just a whole lot of love and faith. (And you can watch it here if you’re interested!)
As I’m sitting with my beloved on our delayed honeymoon, I’ve been reflecting on God’s timing. Sometimes, God calls us to wait and be still. Other times, He calls us into action, to step out on the sea without fear. But all the time, He requires that we trust Him. If marriage has taught me anything, if Covid has taught me anything, it’s that God is trustworthy.
He provides what we need always. Our daughters needed stability, He provided a family unit for them. We needed companionship and love, He gave us each other. We needed to blend a family, He gave us four stolen months of family time. Our plans do not always go according to our vision. But we can always trust that God’s vision is what is best for us.
I could not be happier being married and being the mom of two awesome daughters! Despite all the pandemic stress, these last four months have been the sweetest of my life. I have been surrounded by such love. My husband is the most wonderful, godly man. He pushes me daily to be more Christ-like as I follow his example and he loves me through all the craziness of the year 2020. I love him so much and I’m so glad that I didn’t have to wait until today to start my life with him.
Incidentally, I love seeing other Covid weddings. I love seeing men and women who decide to start their lives together despite the odds. None of our weddings went the way we were expecting, but the time with our loved ones has been sweet. I hope that this tenacity is something that lives beyond the pandemic. I hope to see more and more couples stepping out in faith together. Life is never simple, but it’s always better with your best friend.
Happy Should’ve-Been-Day, my beloved! Here’s to many more changed expectations and exciting journeys!
